San Roque de Cumbaza

The town of San Roque de Cumbaza had its origin in the middle of the XVII century when descendants of the Lamistas arrived in search of food motivated by the abundant fishing and hunting especially in the Cumbaza River.

The district of San Roque de Cumbaza is located in the southwestern part of Lamas, in the buffer zone of ACR Cordillera Escalera, in an extensive valley where the Cumbaza River originates, which gives rise to the Cumbaza micro-basin to the south side and to the north side of the headwaters of the Shanusi River, which belongs to the province of Lamas, San Martin Region.

  • La Pampa Enjoy your vacation on the banks of the Cumbaza River, a quiet place to relax and enjoy the fresh and crystal clear waters.
  •  There is also an environmental education area called La Pampa de los Niños, a place where young people explain about biodiversity. And for young children, there are entertainment games, a camping area, etc.
  • La Monzona is a natural pool formed by the erosion of the river and has a depth of 8 meters, a place where children can learn to swim and dive
  • La Isla del Amor – the Isla del Amor is a small island with a sandy beach where the depth is approximately five meters deep, a private place to be alone with a loved one.
  • Mishquiyacu is a Quechua word that means fresh water. A place where you can swim or simply refresh yourself.

Huacamaillo Waterfall – San Antonio De Cumbaza

Visit Huacamaillo a waterfall with crystal clear and fresh water. During the trip you can observe the dense vegetation and cross the Cumbaza river 3 times to reach this beautiful fall of approximately 20 meters high that ends in a well of approximately 3 meters deep.

Located at 780 meters, it is 45 minutes from the town of San Roque de Cumbaza, a route for hikers, adventurers, scientists, families and students ready for vigorous exercise.

Napo – Añaquiwi Route

This is one of the entrances to the Cordillera Escalera Protection Area. On this route you will be able to observe primary forest along the hike with centennial trees and will be surrounded by biological diversity. We will cross the Anaquiwi stream, which is a fresh and clear water stream.

We will visit an organic coffee farm where you will learn about the process of organic farming, and taste the exquisite flavor of a special cup of coffee.

Toroyacu Waterfall

At 1230m is located this beautiful waterfall of about 100 meters high. Upon arrival you will hear the sound produced by its waters crashing into the pool as if the sky thundered before a heavy rain. This impressive waterfall has a magical atmosphere that welcome travelers from all over the world. A legend says that a bull was in charge of the waterfall and when a hunter approached the scene, the bull ‘Bramaria’ would create a storm that would scare the hunter.

There is a small waterfall next to the main fall where you can take a refreshing shower after your hike. It can take four to six hours to reach this magical place, once there, you will see that it is really worth the hard work.

Chiricyacu Native Community

Native Quechua lamista native community-descendants of the ancient Pokras chancas.

It occupies an area of 5,492.5 hectares, which is part of the “Cordillera Escalera” Regional Conservation Area, with altitudes between 600 to 1500 meters. The forests of this area are home to impressive waterfalls: Toroyacu, Ungurawi, and the great Rumiyacu stone “Hatum rumi”.

The women of the village are specialists in making clay pots, weaving baskets, mats and cotton weaving crafts called ‘Chumbes’ which you can learn.
